I'm going to post this discussion and then leave it up for quite a while. Some of you have already started discussion threads connected to this idea. I'd like to try and create one thread where these stories can be collected.
So, if you've already posted to another discussion, thanks. Come by here, as well, and share your story.
Here's my story...
My story is very brief, but filled with possibilities. Highland Oaks Church of Christ has become known in East Dallas and Garland as the "church with the carnival." At least 6,000 people (10K if you believe the preachers' count!) came to our campus year in and year out. It was a very successful "attractional" event.
For budgetary reasons, Highland Oaks was forced to consider other options last fall. I was part of a team who took a different approach. Five groups held much smaller events. This time, however, we went TO those people who had been coming--into neighborhoods and schools--where we held Trunk or Treat events and spoke with people face-to-face and interacted with them in THEIR neighborhood, not ours.
Each team was made up of people who lived in the neighborhood where they were serving, and we'll be re-convening those groups this spring in another similar effort.
